Selected physical and mechanical properties of resin infused porous carbon composites made from medium density fiberboard

摘要
Carbon/polymer composites were made by infusing carbonized medium density fiberboard (CMDF) with a phenolic resin and an epoxy resin under vacuum. The porosity of the materials was measured by mercury porosimetry, and mechanical properties were characterized using four-point bending tests, tensile tests, and single-edge notch bending fracture toughness tests according to ASTM standards. The results showed that the density of the epoxy resin infused samples was 2 1 percent higher than that of phenolic resin infused samples. The epoxy resin infused CMDF was more than 50 percent stronger than the phenolic resin infused CMDF in tensile and bending strength. The plane-strain fracture toughness of epoxy resin infused CMDF was 50 percent greater than that of phenolic resin infused CMDF.
