摘要：
A short introduction is given placing these new integrated circuits in the general context of developing technologies. The work of the Thomson Group which is described in the subsequent chapters is introduced. The principal advantages of GaAs with respect to their more established rivals (Si for logic circuits and hybrids for microwave circuits) is underlined. Some indications are also given of application areas.
