摘要
The paper presents an investigation on two popular types of wave energy converters, namely Point Absorber (PA) and Oscillating Water Column (OWC), and the issues with their deployments: fix-referenced or self-referenced (floating) and the answer to a question: which deployment is better: fix-referenced or self-referenced? In this research, the numerical models are used to study two representative generic devices: a point absorber and a spar-OWC. To examine their power conversion capacities in different deployments, the Power Take-Offs (PTOs) are considered to be linear in a manner that the PTO damping coefficients can be easily optimised for maximising wave energy conversion. It has shown that the floating PA or OWC is normally more efficient in converting wave energy from the target (the most occurred) waves, whilst for the fix-referenced devices, they tend to extract more energy from waves with long periods. From the practical deployment for device survivability, self-referenced devices may be a better choice because they can be designed to be compliant in the extreme (long) waves.
