The first total synthesis of (-)-gibboside is reported. The route features a novel iron-catalyzed carbocyclization as the key step for the construction of the cis,trans,cis-tetrasubstituted cyclopentane core. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
