摘要
The paper discusses, in a general manner, concepts and ideas for finite element (FE) modeling of entire structures subject to infrequent loadings causing instabilities and collapses. The discussion covers possible research approaches, modeling simplifications, and verification and validation. Aspects of FE modeling such as requirements for global modeling, analysis types and solution techniques, and nonlinear material models with damage and failure are considered. Based on experience gained so far, the difficulties encountered in finite element modeling are recognized and discussed. The discussion is illustrated by a few examples of numerical tests.
