Implementation of Automatic Bus Transfer Scheme Using Multifunction Numerical Protection Relay IEDs on IEC 61850 GOOSE Messaging

摘要
The application of a reliable bus transfer scheme in chemical and petrochemical industries is significant in view of maintaining continuity of power by transferring the load to an alternate source during loss of the normal power source. The paper comprehensively reviews different types of automatic bus transfer schemes and examines how modern technology provides solution that enhances efficiency and reliability in engineering and operations. The paper outlines a bus transfer scheme using numerical protection relays communicating on high-speed, peer-to-peer communication protocol IEC 61850 on Ethernet physical network and using Generic Object Oriented Substation Event (GOOSE) messaging between the IEDs, resulting in a simple, safe, reliable and secure bus transfer scheme. The highlight of this technical paper is its suggestive logic diagrams using Boolean logic gates and logic function blocks that can be programmed into the numerical relay IEDs for implementing the bus transfer schemes and the controls.
