The construction of an innovative cable-stayed footbridge across Herning in Denmark is scheduled to begin in August 1998. The footbridge, which will make extensive use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) materials, is composed of two equal spans of 40 m and a girder width of 5.4 m. The bridge is a key element in an R&D project aimed at evaluating the potential of new non-corrosive materials in bridge structures. The bridge will be structurally monitored after completion to ensure the structural integrity of the structure and to gain information on the behavior of the CFRP products. Reactions on abutments and forces in selected CFRP reinforcement bars will also be measured regularly together with precision measurements of the bridge geometry.
