Design-build approach to renovation projects

Designing systems for existing buildings requires that the engineer have a working knowledge of how equipment and systems are actually installed. With this philosophy, design engineers work closely with plant engineers and fabricators to develop cost-saving designs. The engineering, tooling, and component costs may increase slightly; savings are achieved by reduced assembly costs. Working with the contractors on the front end can have the same effect and dramatically reduce overall project costs. This is best achieved with a design-build strategy, which requires that the engineer and the contractor work as a team, rather than as adversaries. Design engineering with a contractor's perspective also facilitates installation, and provide greater value to the owner.
