Study on tightening torque of thread forming screws

In this paper; the driving torque when driving thread forming screws in structural steel plates is measured from the start of driving until failure of the joint; and the target driving torque is investigated. An example of setting the target driving torque TT based on the penetration torque TP when the thread at the tip of a screw being driven into a steel plate penetrates through the plate and the failure torque TF when the joint fails; is presented. Although the number of cases studied here is limited; penetration torque TP and failure torque TF are obtained by using two types of steel plates (t = 4.5 mm; t = 6.0 mm) and two types of screw diameters (φ = 8 mm; φ; 12; mm); and the target driving torque values are calculated. © 2021 Taylor & Francis Group; London;
