Archival Spotlight The South Side Home Movie Project: Re-Imagining Black Chicago

The South Side Home Movie Project (SSHMP) is an archival and research initiative housed in the Cinema Media Studies Department at the University of Chicago. Under the direction of Professor Jacqueline Stewart SSHMP aims to collect, preserve, digitize, and exhibit amateur home movies from residents on the South Side of Chicago. These primary historical documents of family life and events in Chicago from the mid- to late twentieth century serve to illuminate and often correct the canonical historical record for both the way we think of amateur cinema and African American cinema practices.
