INCOHERENT SPATIAL MODE FILTERING IN A RANDOMLY INHOMOGENEOUS OCEAN WAVE-GUIDE

The efficiency of an algorithm for the processing of multimode fields is analyzed; the algorithm synthesizes the multimode beam pattern of an array in mode space and performs incoherent summation of the responses of the partial beam patterns. A general expression is derived for the pin of an array with this processing technique: it can be used to investigate the influence of the correlation characteristics and spatial mode resolution on the characteristics of the algorithm. Estimates of the maximum gain are obtained in certain model signal-noise situations typical of a vertically oriented array in deep ocean waveguides.
