DFB lasers which are suitably designed for AM analog application are described. Bath kappa.L and mesa width of the laser are optimized to obtain good linearity. The stable analog characteristics has been confirmed by the composite distortion measurement under accelerated aging test. The laser modules equipped with the analog DFB lasers have been realized and their stability is also described. These modules show sufficient characteristics of fiber transmission with 78 carrier loading. Two phenomena which impair transmission quality in the practical fiber systems are theoretically investigated and compared with experimental results. One is noise generation due to Rayleigh backscattering, and the other is distortion generation due to multiple reflection.
