LINE-INTENSITIES IN THE ROTATIONAL BRANCHES OF THE PH(B1-SIGMA+UPSILON'=0-]X3-SIGMA-UPSILON''=0) TRANSITION

Emission intensities of single rotational lines in the (O)P and (S)R branches and of the unresolved Q system of the PH(b1-SIGMA+upsilon'= 0-->X3-SIGMA-upsilon" = 0) transition, are obtained in a microwave powered Ar flow apparatus. Values in the resolved branches are treated by compensation of the temperature dependent population distribution and relative intensities of the lines are obtained as a function of the rotational quantum numbers. In the low J region the observed behaviour is in agreement with the known relations for line strength but major modifications should be introduced after the crossing of the F1 and F3 energy terms in the X3-SIGMA- state in order to account for the experimental trend. The suggested new intensity relations also lead to an estimate of mu(parallel-to)/mu(perpendicular-to)=-6.3+/-1.0.
