Double Symmetry-Protected Bound States in the Continuum in an All-Dielectric Metasurface for Refractive Index Sensing

We numerically investigated double symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BICs) in an all-dielectric metasurface composed of a periodically arranged silicon disk etched with a rectangular slot. Quality factors of the double BICs promptly increase with the decrease of the asymmetry parameter, and their electric fields are locally enhanced in surrounding medium. The refractive index sensor based on the double BICs exhibits excellent performance with figures of merit of 3243 and 171,965, respectively. Our proposed metasurface will open up avenues for the development of applications in multiwavelength sensors, narrow-band filters, optical switches, and nonlinear optics.
