Fluorescence studies on luminol in water-organic solvent mixtures

摘要
The spectral shift of fluorescence emission and photophysical propel-ties of luminol (3-aminophthalhydrazide) in various water/organic solvent mixtures have been studied using steady state and time resolved emission spectroscopy. The red shift in fluorescence spectra observed by the gradual addition of water in organic solvents containing luminol is interpreted as due to the stronger hydrogen bonding interaction between luminol and water molecules in the excited state. The fluorescence decay of luminol is described by biexponential kinetics in all the solvent mixtures. The origin of these biexponential decay kinetics has been interpreted as due to the formation of two different types of hydrogen bonded complexes between luminol/water and luminol/organic solvents. Fluorescence quenching of luminol by CCl4 and dilute triethylamine has also been examined.
