A Case Study of English Speech Act Realization of "Refusals" among Chinese EFL Learners

摘要
The present study tried to investigate how Chinese EFL learners followed different pragmatic patterns to produce the speech act of refusal and what strategies they used in different situations and under various conditions. Fifty students majoring in English filled out a questionnaire on discourse completion test (DCT). The obtained data from the questionnaires were first codified and then each refusal was classified, analyzed and interpreted based on a modified version of Beebe et al.'s taxonomy of refusal strategies. The results showed that the Chinese EFL learners were varied in adopting refusal strategies.
