A liquid scintillator detector with wavelength-shifting fibre readout

A technique based on liquid scintillator with wavelength-shifting fibre readout is interesting for large-mass neutrino detectors. in this paper, we present the first results obtained with a laboratory prototype assembled at CERN. In the configuration tested, a large light yield has been observed and attenuation lengths of the order of 3.2 m have been measured. As a comparison, we also measured the attenuation length of the fibres in air using the same setup. No significant difference in attenuation length between the fibres in air and in liquid was measured. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
