Nitriding response of chromium containing ferritic steels on plasma immersion ion implantation at elevated temperature

摘要
The result of nitriding ferritic steels using a PI3 treatment depends strongly on the composition of the steel. For chromium containing steels, an expanded ferrite phase was found for higher chromium contents (about 3(.)6%Cr) under certain treatment conditions. Standard metallography did not reveal any precipitation and the treated surface layer possessed a uniform microstructure. The expanded ferrite phase exhibits high hardness and thus good wear resistance.
