State of the art of genotypic HIV-1 drug resistance

Treatment of HIV-1 infected individuals with antiviral drugs in many cases results in the emergence of HIV-1 variants with reduced sensitivity to these drugs. Apart from measuring changes in viral drug susceptibility in cell culture, several methods have been applied to determine the emergence of specific resistance-conferring mutations genotypically. This review describes the current state of the art on these genotypic approaches, their application and constraints. The value of genotypic determinations compared with measuring drug susceptibility is also discussed.
