In his latest works, Richard Rorty, who is called the most influential contemporary American philosopher, argues that the era of post-philosophical culture has set in. This outcome derives from the fact that it is literature with its plots and images, and not philosophy, that is able to tell the truth about our nature and the world as a whole. The single legitimate activity of departments of philosophy, namely, the interpretation and teaching of the great philosophical texts of the past, can be entirely taken over by departments of literature. © 1998, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
