摘要
Eating disorders affect 5% of adolescent and young adult females. Anorexia nervosa is associated with numerous medical complications, including hypothalamic amenorrhea, whereas bulimia nervosa can be difficult to treat particularly if there is a history of sexual abuse. Gynecologists providing care to younger women must be aware of the signs and symptoms of these disorders and how to develop a therapeutic relationship with patients. The primary treatment of amenorrhea should be establishing healthy eating habits rather than supplementing with sex hormones. This article focuses on the medical management of these common conditions, with emphasis on the role of the woman's primary care provider. Practical solutions to common problems are emphasized, in addition to strategies to effectively communicate with patients.
