The trailing fracture process zone (FPZ) of an alumina WL-DCB specimen subjected to cyclic loading was analyzed by a hybrid experimental-numerical procedure involving phase-shifting moire interferometry and finite element analysis. The residual crack opening profile at unloading continued to increase with cyclic loading until it matched the crack opening profile at maximum load. This anomaly is attributed to the increasing interference of the pulled out grains and provides a mechanistic explanation for the common notion that monolithic ceramics do not fatigue.
