摘要
Elected officials are starting to appreciate that with climate change, increasing demands, and the need to protect the environment, water supply is as much a challenge as any other public service. Developed countries could meet much of their short and mid term water demands and delay the capital costs of new water supplies and infrastructure by implementing water-use efficiencies. Toilets are the main source of water use in the home, accounting for up to 35% of an average household's water consumption. Communities seeking new water supplies face many challenges in meeting competing demands for water. Population increases will intensify demands placed on existing freshwater supplies. At the same time many of these sources are becoming increasingly constrained by saltwater intrusion, which is expected to become even more severe with rising sea levels.
