A new Cd(II) polymer [Cd(btc)(4,4 '-bipyridine)](n) 1 (H(4)btc = 3,3 ',4,5 '-biphenyl tetracarboxylic acid) was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The compound crystallizes with b = 20.223(3), c = 13.478(2) angstrom, a = 11.9134(18), beta = 110.486(2)degrees, alpha = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees, V = 3041.8(8) angstrom(3), Z = 4, in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c, mu = 1.468 mm(-1), M-r = 690.33, F(000) = 1600, D-c = 1.771 mg/m(3), the final R = 0.0546 and wR = 0.1480 for 5647 observed reflections with I > 2 sigma(I). The compound presents a three-dimensional (3D) network extended by both 4,4 '-bipyridine ligands and btc(4-) anions in which the btc(4-) anions employ a chelating coordination mode. The structure could be described as a (3,4,5)-connected 3D network with (4(2).6(3).7(4).8)(4(2).6(3).7)(6.7(2)) topology net from the topology point of view. Elemental analyses, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction properties of 1 are also investigated.
