Features of water dynamics and hydrological structure in the Northeastern Black Sea in autumn, 1993

The results of hydrographic survey carried out in the Northeastern Black Sea from 8 to 16 November, 1993 (Cruise 27 of R/V ''Vityaz'') are analyzed. During this period the circulation in this region differed sufficiently from the usual one. An intensive meandering of the Main Black Sea Current (MBSC) was observed. In the open sea there was a deep anticyclonic eddy at the top of a large anticyclonic meander at the longitude of the Kerch Strait. An intensive meandering of MBSC promoted significant water exchange between the near shore and central sea parts: through the 500 m latitudinal cross-section (43 degrees 50' N), 325 km long, 237 km(3) of water were transported during 24 hours to the sea centre and 220 km(3) to the coastal zone. The influence of hurricane, that raged in Novorossiisk area from 10 to 12 of November, upon the hydrological structure and water circulation is also analysed.
