Silicon-on-lithium niobate waveguides for mid-infrared

A planar waveguide design is studied for the mid-infrared wavelengths from 2.5 mu m to 4.5 mu m by simulation. Lithiumniobate and silicon are integrated to increase functionality. Silicon as a higher index material is introduced on behalf of its transparency to the infrared spectrum. Power transfer from a buried lithium-niobate waveguide to silicon is simulated using field mode matching software for several wavelengths and taper dimensions. In addition, bend losses and mode mismatch losses to a quantum cascade laser are evaluated by simulation.
