Volume and composition surface changes in alkali silicate glass irradiated with electrons

摘要
Alkali silicate glasses were irradiated with 50 keV defocused electron beam of 60 mu m diameter. The compositional as well as volume changes were measured by means of electron microprobe and scanning electron microscopy. The compositional changes were found to significantly extend beyond the directly irradiated volume. The expansion of the volume reached up to nearly 100%.
