This paper describes a parametric study of the flow in swirl brakes at the inlet of the shroud seal of a centrifugal pump or compressor. After comparison of current and previously obtained results, the significant geometrical parameters have been modified over a relevant range and their influence on the effectiveness of the swirl braking vanes has been evaluated. The data presented in this paper allow an optimisation of the swirl brake geometry and an estimation of the performance degradation if the optimum dimensions are not possible.
