EDM of Si3N4-based electrical conductive ceramics

This paper presents a detailed investigation of the EDM machining of Si3N4-based ceramic composites. Besides the classical material removal mechanism of melting and evaporation, chemical decomposition and oxidation occur during machining. The latter reactions strongly influence the material removal rate and surface integrity. How much one or the other material removal mechanism is present, depends on the material composition, the generator settings and the used dielectric. The influence of the EDM pulse shape, the dielectric, the ceramic composition and sinter additives on the material removal rate and the surface integrity of Si3N4-TiN by EDM is investigated and analyzed in depth. In addition, the EDM performance of some other Si3N4-based ceramics with WC and TiCN as second phase is briefly discussed.
