The presence of PRRS virus in the period from 2011 to 2016 in the dead pigs in Slovenia

Between 2011 and 2016, a total 2.053 samples of dead pigs were examined by RT-PCR method for the detection of nucleic acids of PRRS virus. During this period the presence of PRRS virus was demonstrated from 17,59 to 27,38% of the investigated samples. These results confirm that the infection with PRRS virus was constantly presented in the last 6 years in Slovenian pig farms and the disease is now endemically present. Detection of the presence of PRRS virus in dead pigs can be an important indicator of the prevalence, the persistence and the evolution of the PRRS in pig farms. These data do not give much hope for rapid improvement of the situation of PRRS in Slovenia if we will not substantially change the approach towards the control and eradication of PRRS.
