Effects of Cooperative Learning (STAD) on Student Achievement in Jawi Among Year Five Pupils

摘要
This study aims to see the effect of cooperative learning method in STAD (Student Team Achievement Division) against learning Jawi on primary school's pupils. Quasi-experimental design was used in the study. The study lasted for 12 hours (4 sessions of teaching and learning) which was made up of 30 respondents who were poor in Jawi (KCJ) but had a range of academic achievement were distributed deliberately into two groups; treatment group (co-operative method) and control group (conventional method). The instrument used is the pre and post-performance tests and questionnaires on pupils' perception. Observations are also made. Data was analyzed with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) V20 used to analyze data. The results showed that the mean test achievement in post-treatment group was higher with 88.5 compared to the mean control-group which was 76.9. The frequency score and percentage of interest dimensions, excitement and social skills in the treatment-group were also more than 90%. Observation data showed that respondents in the treatment-group were more responsible towards its group compared to the respondents in control-group. STAD method was very effective in improving the JAWI achievement and pupils' perceptions in terms of interest, excitement, and social skills. Ongoing research of the Cooperative Learning method needs to be implemented to gain solid evidence about its effectiveness.
