Cycloid combustion - A new concept for industrial combustion with low-calorific fuels

Advanced lignite combustion techniques for the decentralised energy supply belong to the research aims at BTU Cottbus and at ERI (Energy Resource Institute). A focus of this research is the development of a new combustion system for decentralised heat supply - the cycloidal firing. The extensive experimental tests carried out in a 500 kW testing facility have shown that the principle of cycloidal firing with the rotational flow affected by swirls is particularly suitable for the combustion of Lusatian dry lignite [1, 2]. The co-combustion of mechanically pressed sewage sludge and woodchips was also successfully carried in other combustion tests. Thus the particular suitability of cycloidal firing for the decentralised heat market was shown. Experimental works are accompanied by investigations on flow dynamics in the combustion chamber and the development of a numerical model of the firing system.
