Cave 9 in the Active Handling Building on the UKAEA site at Winfrith was an active cell used for experimental work on irradiated fuel during the 1970s and 1980s. During 1998 and 1999 the cave was stripped out, decontaminated acid demolished. The challenge was to complete the decontamination of the structure to achieve free release disposal of the concrete and to minimise the volume of low level waste.
