This paper discusses the final disposal possibilities for radioactive wastes in the Federal Republic of Germany and the related questions of waste conditioning, storage methods and safety. The programs in progress in neighboring CEC countries and in the USA are also mentioned briefly. The authors conclude that the existing final disposal possibilities are sufficiently well known and safe, but that they could be improved still further by future development work. The residual hazard potential of radioactive wastes from fuel reporcessing after about 1000 years of storage is lower than that of known inorganic ore deposits.
