SYNTHESIS, ANTIBACTERIAL AND ANTHELMINTIC ACTIVITY OF 2,5-DISUBSTITUTED BENZIMIDAZOLES

A series of 2,5-disubstituted benzimidazoles were synthesized by nitration of 2-alkyl/aryl benzimidazoles by using conc. HNO3 and conc. H2SO4. The structures of the compounds were established by UV, IR, H-1 NMR and El-MS spectroscopy. The synthesized compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against Gram negative bacterial species such as E. coli. (NCIM 1239) Proteus vulgaris (MTCC 1771) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (NCIM 2036) and Gram positive species such as Staphylococcus aureus (NCIM 2079), S. epidermidis (NCIM 2081). Majority of the compounds showed moderate to excellent antibacterial activity against the tested microorganisms.
