Treatment of X-substituted (eta(6)-arene) tricarbonylchromium complexes with a nucleophile and a proton source afforded new arenetricarbonylchromium complexes via chromium hydride intermediates and elimination of HX (cine and tele nucleophilic aromatic substitutions). Treatment of (eta(5)-X-substituted-cyclohexadienyl)tricarbonyl manganese complexes with hydride and a proton source gave eta(5)-cyclohexadienyl complexes resulting from a cleavage of the C-X bond: the eta(3)-X-substituted cyclohexenyl intermediates underwent elimination of an agostic hydrogen and the X group.
