As part of Shippensburg University's sustainability plan, its existing 60-year-old central coal-fired heating plant generating 70,000 lb/h (19 900 kW) of steam at peak demand was replaced with a new decentralized hot water heating system. A prior study with four potential configurations for the utility system was conducted. Technical and economic analyses, qualitative advantages and disadvantages were compared.
