The School of Seamen Apprentices in the City of Rio Grande / RS (1861-1889)

The present work has the objective of approaching the establishment of the School of Marines Apprentices in the city of Rio Grande, in the years of 1861 to 1889. The principles of this institution and its corrective actions and of teaching of crafts, destined to the underprivileged boys are discussed or in situations of vulnerability. As a theoretical-methodological foundation, Cultural History is used for the documentary analysis of imperial decrees and the newspapers "O tempo" e "Echo do Sul". It was concluded that the discipline and teaching instituted in the institution were consistent with the legislation and the socio-cultural context in force. However, the disciplinary rigidity applied to the boys did not always promote the expected results, humping into resistance actions.
