Phase relations in the Sm-Fe-V system, especially around the compound Sm-3(Fe,V)(29), have been studied. Isothermal sections of the iron-rich corner of the Sm-Fe-V system were constructed from X-ray diffraction studies and microstructural observations. alpha-(Fe,V), gamma-(Fe,V), Sm-2(Fe,V)(17), Sm(Fe,V)(12) and liquid phases are present near the Sm-3(Fe,V)(29) compound after annealing at 1100 degrees C. However, nearly single phase Sm-3(Fe,V)(29) can be obtained with an alloy of composition Sm9.5Fe83.5V7. The solid solubility of Sm in Sm-3(Fe,V)29 compound is very small, but that of V is in the range 5.6 at% to 9.2 at%. The liquid phase region expands to the lower V content with increasing annealing temperature, leading to a decreasing V content in the Sm(Fe,V)(12) compound at high temperature.
