An investigation of HDDR phenomena in the Sm-3(Fe,V)(29) compound

Hydrogenation, Disproportionation, Desorption, Recombination (HDDR) phenomena have been studied in the new magnetic phase, Sm-3(Fe,V)(29). Samples of Sm-3(Fe,V)(29) were HDDR treated at various temperatures, from 700 degrees C to 950 degrees C. XRD measurements showed that the samples did not recombine into Sm-3(Fe,V)(29), but rather, recombined into a mixture of a TbCu7 type phase and alpha-Fe(V). An extra XRD peak was observed after HDDR at 950 degrees C and it is possible that this extra peak can be attributed to Sm-2(Fe,V)(17), since heating Sm-3(Fe,V)(29) directly to 1100 degrees C under hydrogen, results in recombination into Sm-2(Fe,V)(17) and alpha-Fe(V). Material with an intrinsic coercivity of 580 kAm(-1) (7.3 kOe) was obtained after HDDR treatment at 800 degrees C and nitrogenation at 560 degrees C for 4 hours.
