Effects of Oxidizing Additives on Optical Properties of Bi2O3-B2O3-SiO2 Glasses

Glasses with compositions (65-x)Bi2O3-10B(2)O(3)-25SiO(2)-xSb(2)O(3)/As2O3/CeO2 (x = 0, 0.5, 1) have been prepared by conventional melt quench technique. X-ray diffraction patterns indicated existence of Bi-0 particles dispersed in glass in the glass x = 0. Great improvement in transmittance was observed by adding Sb2O3, As2O3, or CeO2. The color lightening effect of these oxidizing additives on bismuth oxide glasses and the variation of UV absorption edge were discussed in terms of specific role these different types of metal ions played in glasses.
