Selectively functionalised carbohydrate derivatives underwent SmI2-promoted Grob-fragmentation reactions. This was followed by an in situ, stereocontrolled SmI2-mediated cyclisation to afford the corresponding cyclopentanols. Copyright (C) 1996 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd
