Demographic study of choral programs and conductors in four-year institutions in the United States

The purpose of this research was to obtain a demographic profile of choral music programs and conductors in four-year institutions within the Untied States. Results indicated four-year institutions (N = 1780) with music programs (n = 959) had a combined total of 2,687 choral ensembles. Male conductors (n = 906) were listed as the conductor of 1, 759 choral ensembles and female conductors (n =327) were listed as the conductor of 538 ensembles. Eighty-three percent of Directors of Choral Activities were males (n = 744) and seventeen percent were females (n = 148). Women's choirs (n =251) directed by female conductors (n =180) constituted seventy-two percent of the total while male directed women's choirs (n = 71) constituted twenty-eight percent. The number of female conductors in which a women's choir was the only ensemble credited to them totaled 115, or thirty-five percent.
