摘要
A leader is a person who serves to influence the behavior of others. Groups of individuals always have leaders, even if such individuals are not appointed or designated. Instrumental leadership seeks to direct courses of action for group members, while expressive leadership serves to create harmony and solidarity among the members. Voltaire said, ''An institution is the lengthened shadow of one person,'' and an institution of higher learning is no exception to this rule. This, of course, means that the success or failure of the institution derives largely from action or the Lack of action on the part of the leader. It is true, of course, that many institutions of higher learning have quasi independently organized schools, many of a highly professional type. Therefore, it is conceivable that for any particular institution, one or more of the professional schools may operate more successfully than another because of their independence from the total institution.
