摘要：
This article is devoted to humour and irony as important rhetorical devices in modern British and American discourse of mass media. By teaching non-native speaking students how to recognize linguistic means of creating comical effect in newspaper articles and explaining basic element of functional analysis, one can improve not only their reading skills, but also develop resistance to speech manipulation.
