Partial exchange of the alkali metal ions for tetraalkylammonium cations of Rb3P7 and Cs3P11 in Liquid ammonia results in the formation of [(CH3)(4)N]2RbP7(NH3) (1) and [(C2H5)(4)N]Cs2P11 (2) The crystal structures reveal the existence of one-dimensional (1)(infinity)[RbP7](2-) chains in the former and two-dimensional (2)(infinity)[Cs2P11](-) layers in the latter compound. The nortricyclane cage in 1 is distorted by one-sided coordination to the Rb ions in a manner that can be related to the valence tautomerism of the free P-7(3-) anion.
