Adsorption structure of 1,3-butadiene chemisorbed on Pd(110) has been studied by high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The HREELS and NEXAFS results revealed that 1,3-butadiene is adsorbed with pi-bond and the molecular plane is parallel to the surface, in which the C-C single bond in 1,3-butadiene on Pd(110) is aligned toward [1 (1) over bar0]. The adsorption site and geometry were determined oil the basis of the STM image analysis. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
