In this review, the characteristics of defects in both laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) fabricated and wrought 17-4PH stainless steel are specifically analysed in terms of the effects of process parameters and heat treatments on the microstructure, mechanical properties. Void formation during the LPBF fabrication of 17-4PH stainless steel affects its deformation behaviour under dynamic loading conditions so. The purpose of this study is to compare the performance of heat treated and non-heat treated LPBF produced and wrought 17-4PH stainless steel under ultra-low cycle fatigue (ULCF) loading conditions. The comparison of LPBF and wrought specimens is made with respect to microstructure, fractography, surface hardness and mechanical properties. Lower elongation to failure of LPBF produced 17-4PH stainless steel that has been reported in the literature is due to the presence of defects such as pores caused by entrapped gas, un-melted regions and powder particles resulting from lack of fusion.
