Imbibitional chilling injury occurs under a sharp gradient of water potential between seeds and soil associated with low temperature (<10℃), which causes the physical change in membrane structure and a resulting metabolic dysfunction in it. The cracking lesions perhaps is the most severe manifestation. In general, vigor decreases and ultimately viability completely loses in seeds.
