A new Hall-generator current sensor has been developed for application in low-voltage circuit breakers with a solid-state static tripping device in the 225 A-4000 A class. Composed of a Hall generator and a small-sized miniature-core current transformer, this current sensor is notable in varying the rated current setting for a breaker over a very wide range. For the 600 A frame, as an example, a circuit breaker with a 200 A-600 A variable ampere range has been developed as a commercial product. The authors describe the design, structure, characteristics, and applications of this new current sensor.
